Window-mounted room air conditioners (RACs) first appeared in the United States in the 1930s. Compared to todayÃ¢Â€Â™s models, these units were large, heavy, noisy and costly. Even so, Wabout 33,000 RACs were sold in 1941.1 Since their inception, RACs have grown in acceptance (and sales) and have become a reliable means to provide space cooling for millions of Americans.
